Growing up in the Philadelphia area, New Year’s Day would not be complete without watching the Mummers. For those of you not from the area, The Mummers Parade has been a tradition in Philadelphia for well over 100 years. The Parade became an official city event beginning in 1900, but the tradition “unofficially” began in the 1800’s.

What it involves are men, women and some children parading through the city in these elaborate costumes to celebrate the New Year. There are many different types of costumes broken down into divisions which are judged and one is picked as the winner from each division at the end of the parade. The parade is an all day event, starting in the morning and ending in the early evening.

There is truly no other parade in the country quite like the Mummers. I have listed links if you are interested in attending this year’s parade, or just interested in learning more about the pageantry of the parade:

I’d like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and Best Wishes for 2013!
