Storm victim 6 year old Steven Heckman from Amityville in need of a Bone Marrow Transplant

29 Nov

Steven Heckman isn’t concerned about what he is getting for the holidays this year. Right now he is just concerned about staying alive. Steven was diagnosed in August 2011 with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia. To add insult to injury, he and his family; from Amityville, NY (Long Island) lost their family home to Hurricane Sandy.

The Heckman’s plan to rebuild, but right now their main concern is their son and finding a bone marrow match. Steven’s form of Leukemia can be treated by chemotherapy and radiation kill diseased cells, but they also remove healthy ones, leaving the patient with a weakened immune system.

There are several ways you can help. Here are a few sites to view:

What to do When Mommy Gets Sick

28 Nov

sick mom

I am writing this as I am recovering from the flu. I have had this for over two weeks and have been miserable. Tis’ the season for coughing, sneezing, sore throats, fevers, aches, all the fun stuff winter brings, especially the flu. As Moms. we are all experts on taking care of our children when they are sick, but what do we do when we get sick? Who will manage the household without it falling into complete disarray?

Due to the severity of the flu strain that is going around this season, I urge everyone to please get a flu shot if you can. I have listed the link to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control)  and  found this article from Familiesonline Magazine that hopefully will help Moms when they fall ill. It offers some pretty good advice:

Here is the link to the CDC that shows where the Flu outbreak is severe, and links to more information about this year’s flu strain:

Take my poll: Are you getting a flu shot?

Kidco PeaPod Travel Tents Recall

16 Nov

Infants and young children can roll off the edge of the inflatable air mattress, become entrapped between the mattress and the fabric sides of the tent, and suffocate. There have been six reports to the CPSC and three reports to Health Canada of children who became entrapped or experienced physical distress in the product. Two of the six reports included infants who were found crying underneath of the mattress that had not been inserted into the zippered pocket on the bottom of the tent. The CPSC is aware of a death of a 5-month-old boy in December 2011 in New York, who was found with his face pressed against the side wall of the tent. The cause of death was not determined.

2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is Almost Here!

15 Nov

Ok. it’s almost here! Hooray! I can remember as a young child getting up early with my brother to watch the parade. Our house would already have the wonderful smells of yummy things to come throughout the day. We would sit, on the couch, eating our pancakes and whatever other goodies we could get our hands on, ooohing and aaahing at each balloon or float that passed, eagerly awaiting the arrival of “the big man”. I now have passed that traditional along in my family. I hope to go one year. My mother went with her grandmonther in the 1950’s.

Below is the link to the Thanksgiving Day Parade site. There are lots of things to do for the kids there pre-parade as well. I believe after the parade you can also vote on your favorite balloon. I am wishing everyone a very happy and safe Thanksgiving! Enjoy time with your family.

Thanksgiving Books For Children

13 Nov

I have two great Thanksgiving books to recommend to parents:

Happy Thanksgiving, Biscuit, by Alyssa Satin Capucilli; Harper Collins

I highly recommend this book for the little ones. When mine were young, they loved to read about Biscuit’s adventures. The books went everywhere with us, and really instilled a love of reading at an early age. Below is the link for more information about the book:

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving; Charles Schultz

Who doesn’t love Peanuts? This is a great book for older children and is a great read. It talks a little more about the meaning of Thanksgiving in a way that  children can understand. Love it! Here is the link for more information about this book:
